On December 22nd, the Spanish Christmas lottery is celebrated and broadcast live on TV. It is the most famous draw of the year and every family and company buys their number to see if they win El Gordo (literally the fat (masculine), meaning the biggest prize).

However, since 2013 in Catalonia we also have another lottery event on December 31st: La Grossa de Cap d’Any (literally the New Year’s fat (feminine this time), referring also to the prize haha 🙂 and represented by a big woman).
It’s also a broadcast live TV event and you can buy tickets almost anywhere. The profits of the Catalan lottery go to social actions and programs for the most disadvantaged groups in Catalan society.
La Grossa is also celebrated on Sant Jordi, around the 23rd of April.
