Every 23rd of April in Catalonia we celebrate Sant Jordi’s Day (Saint George).
I love this day so much, I think it’s the most beautiful day of the year because the streets are crowded with people and stalls with plenty of books and roses.
This day here is similar to Saint Valentine’s Day in the rest of the world meaning the love day. However, it’s a tradition that men give roses to women and women give books to men.
Giving roses comes from Sant Jordi’s legend: Sant Jordi killed a dragon who was going to eat a princess and from his blood, a rosebush was born, then he cut a rose from it and gave it to the princess.
And we give books because the 23rd of April is also the Books Day and the date on which Miguel de Cervantes and William Shakespeare died.
I highly recommend you to be one 23rd of April in Catalonia as it is a very nice day and there is a great and unique atmosphere in the streets 🙂
